The vine mariri, Banisteriopsis caapi.

Beginning in the 1960's, questions arose from Brazilian authorities in relation to the use of the Vegetal in religious rituals, culminating in 1985 with the temporary inclusion of Banisteriopsis caapi in the list of substances prohibited by the Division of Sanitary Monitoring of Medicines of the Brazilian Ministry of Health (DIMED)..

Since then, health professionals affiliated with the UDV mobilized to collect existing scientific information regarding Hoasca. In 1986 the Center of Medical Studies was formed, today known as The Medical-Scientific Department of the UDV or DEMEC.

Composed of commissions, DEMEC has among its various attributes, the incentive to accompany the realization of scientific studies. It is the interface between the Center and the academic world and acts as a facilitator for various institutions to carry out scientific studies.

Oriented by ethical principles compatible with the doctrine of the União, DEMEC is an important point of reference within the scientific knowledge of Hoasca.

Beyond making information available on the topic, DEMEC collaborates with studies regarding the effects of the tea and promotes scientific conventions.
