Mission Statement
DEMEC's ethical commitments

The following document was developed by health professionals of the Centro Espírita Beneficente União do Vegetal during the First UDV Health Convention in 1991.

Considering that the use of Hoasca tea is not authorized in Brazil as a type of therapy, and considering the opportunity of public clarification of the ethical principles that guide the Department of Medical and Scientific Studies and the health professionals of the União do Vegetal, DECLARE THAT:

1º. They will not make use of Hoasca tea in a professional manner, within or outside of the Centro Espírita Beneficente União do Vegetal, without there being scientific proof of the tea's therapeutic quality.

2º. Within the field of the União do Vegetal they will limit their professional activities to the clinical service of members, when necessary, and to observations and scientific studies on the use of the tea by members of the Center, when authorized by DEMEC.

3º. They will not take advantage of their professional relationships and of the condition of members of the Centro Espírita Beneficente União do Vegetal by guiding clients to this society, with the objective of making therapeutic use of the tea..

4º. They accept DEMEC as the supervisory department of studies and scientific works related to Hoasca, carried out by members of the Centro Espírita Beneficente União do Vegetal.

5º. All studies and works supervised by DEMEC will obey the internal norms of the Centro Espírita Beneficente União do Vegetal as well as external norms, especially the Medical Code of Ethics and the Psychologists Professional Code of Ethics.

6º. The scientific studies and projects supervised by DEMEC will be oriented by the exclusion of preconceptions and by the moral integrity and decorum of the researchers involved. Researchers will abstain from divulging results, which will only be done, opportunely, by DEMEC.

7º. The present letter of principles may be reevaluated, with the existence of official scientific proof of the therapeutic capacity of Hoasca tea.

Medical Code of Ethics (Resolution CEM n.1246/88), the Psychologists Professional Code of Ethics (Resolution CPF n.002/87), the International Medical Code of Ethics and the declarations of Nuremberg, Geneva, and Helsinki, and the Universal Human Rights Declaration;

Considering that, statutorily, the Centro Espírita Beneficente União do Vegetal has as objectives to make use of the tea called Hoasca and to transform the human being in the sense of developing moral, intellectual, and spiritual virtues;
